Pochettino Poised to Take USMNT Reins

A seismic shift is imminent for the U.S. men’s national team. Multiple reports indicate that the highly coveted Mauricio Pochettino is on the verge of becoming the next head coach. The Argentine tactician, who parted ways with Chelsea earlier this summer, is set to replace Gregg Berhalter, whose tenure ended prematurely following a disappointing Copa América campaign.

Pochettino’s appointment would mark a monumental leap for U.S. Soccer. Renowned for his intensity and tactical acumen, the 52-year-old is undoubtedly the most high-profile coach ever linked to the USMNT. His track record, particularly at Tottenham Hotspur where he transformed the club into a Champions League finalist, speaks volumes about his coaching prowess. However, his subsequent stints at Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea were met with mixed results.

Financially, Pochettino’s arrival will be a significant investment. His previous salaries at PSG and Chelsea were in the stratosphere compared to Berhalter’s comparatively modest compensation. It remains to be seen when the deal will be finalized and Pochettino will officially take the helm.

The pursuit of Pochettino has been spearheaded by U.S. Soccer sporting director Matt Crocker, who previously worked with the Argentine at Southampton. Crocker’s familiarity with Pochettino’s style and methods likely played a crucial role in luring the former Tottenham boss to the United States.

With the 2026 World Cup on the horizon, U.S. Soccer is clearly aiming high. Pochettino’s appointment is a bold statement of intent, signaling a desire to compete at the highest level.
